Vampires are naturally suspicious of new vampires moving into their cities. There are a variety of different rituals and paths that a vampire might take in order to get acknowledged in a city.
This is the streamlined process that will allow new players to join our game and not burden our existing players and storytellers. Lots of different games do this process differently, but this is how the IC traditional process works in Dark Reign Chronicles.
Letters of Introduction
Vampires don’t do anything for free. They certainly don’t write letters of introduction for every vampire leaving their city. In general, vampires with high standing will make the effort to get a letter of introduction. It is generally understood that vampires with low standing move quite a bit as they have less ties.
A primogen of a city will write a formal letter of introduction for vampires moving out of their city for the price of a trivial boon. This boon will go into play with various NPCs in the world and will help pull new players into the metaplot. Some of the cities are listed here: http://darkreignchronicles.wikidot.com/other-cities.
If you want to start game with a letter of introduction, talk to a storyteller. Most of the vampires moving to Seattle are low status that want to make a name for themselves and will not have a letter of introduction.
Acknowledgement and Introduction to the Prince
Primogen are responsible for every vampire they bring before their Prince. It is the price that a primogen pays gladly for the power of the position.
A vampire of high standing with a letter of introduction will likely be introduced to the Prince at the first opportunity by their primogen. A vampire with low standing will likely be questioned and their story verified.
Some primogen charge a trivial boon for the risk of presenting an unknown vampire to their Prince. After all, if that new arrival turns out to be a member of the Sabbat, then that Primogen may be held accountable by the Prince.
Note: Charging more than a trivial boon is considered gauche and gouging. The storyteller staff STRONGLY requests that primogen avoid gouging new players.
How does a primogen verify that a new arrival is a member of the Camarilla?
There are several possibilities.
- A politics test modified by Camarilla Lore will verify the status that belongs to a given identity. For example, Billy Brujah has a new brujah claiming to be Sammie Brujah and wants to verify that Sammie Brujah is indeed a member of the Camarilla. If he succeeds, he will know if the identity Sammie Brujah is a member of the Camarilla.
- The primogen should spend some time questioning the new arrival about their knowledge of the Camarilla, the traditions, and their former cities.
- Aura Perception and Telepathy
- It is in the best interest of primogen from different cities to cooperate in order to verify the identity of new travelers. All primogen possess a phantom level of contacts that allows them to verify the stories of new arrivals. This process takes about a week’s time, depending on the standing of the new arrival.
Note: This is also a way for new players to get introduced to the game and the world. Nothing brings a person into their character’s mindset like a good questioning. This is a way to provide good connections to new players. We were all new LARPers at one point. Let’s try to build a good game for everyone.
What if my new character is not presented to the Prince the first night?
It is possible that a new arrival will not be acknowledged the first night. However, there is a grace period. It is a long standing tradition that new vampires have a month to get introduced to the Prince. During that first month, the new arrival is considered a guest and will have all of the normal protections of being a member of the Camarilla.
What my new character is not presented after the first month?
After a month, the guest status for new arrivals dissolves. It is traditional for the Prince to harshly question the new arrival and their primogen. After all, if a primogen isn’t doing their job, what good are they? If a new arrival proves to be a troublemaker, the primogen might ask the Prince to send them on their way. If the primogen turns out to be wrong, the Prince might dismiss them from their post for wasting his time.
